Dental anxiety: how to combat it

Do you suffer a dental phobia or dental anxiety?  Are you anxious or worried about going to the dentist? Don’t worry, you are not alone and we understand and will listen to your concerns. Don’t avoid going to the dentist, make an appointment to talk to the caring and the gentle team at Your Dentist Darwin.

At Your Dentist Darwin, we help patients with dental anxiety all the time. Having a fear of dental treatments such as Root Canal and tooth extractions is nothing to be ashamed of. We understand that there are a number of different things that can contribute to dental anxiety and fear.

We can help alleviate dental anxiety and phobias for you and your family with our FOUR main resolutions for patients who suffer from a fear of the dentist.

I’m anxious the treatment will be painful for uncomfortable

It is not uncommon for people to feel anxious about a dentist causing pain during dental treatment. Worrying if your tooth extraction or root canal is going to hurt is stressful. Your Dentist are especially gentle when cleaning, scaling and performing your dental treatments.

Nevertheless, if you feel that you may need to be more relaxed during your treatment appointments, we can prescribe an oral conscious sedation medication for anxiety relief. Conscious sedation dentistry with Your Dentist is prescribed in pill form. Once it has come into effect you should feel totally relaxed.

I haven’t been to the dentist in a while and don’t want to be criticised or judged

Patients may feel embarrassed because they needed treatment in the past and didn’t book the treatment appointment or they didn’t agree with a recommendation from a previous dentist.

At Your Dentist Darwin, we practice what we like to call ‘Blame-Free Dentistry’. This means that during your visits with Your Dentist, we will listen to your concerns without criticising or judging your oral health.

I can’t afford it

Your Dentist Darwin aims to provide quality dentistry that is good value. We do not necessarily think we are the cheapest dentist, or the most expensive. We will never recommend unnecessary treatment, nor will we compromise your oral health with less extensive work when more is needed.

Dental visits can be pricey, and dental treatment like new dentures, a tooth extraction or root canal therapy can be expensive. However, there will be no surprises with our fees; we aim to keep you well informed for mutual consent.
If you have difficulty with the price, we can arrange for you to spread your treatments or the payments out if necessary.  Find more information about our payment plan options here.

I am scared and just can’t seem to relax

Dental anxiety makes it hard to relax during your dental visit, which is why we will try to make it as comfortable as possible during your time with us at Your Dentist Darwin.  To help you feel less stress, we offer:

  • Televisions in treatment room
  • Noise canceling headphones to listen to music, watch your favourite movies or TV shows.
  • Blankets and pillows
  • Longer appointments – we can go at your pace
  • Caring and gentle staff
  • Oral Sedation – Sleep Dentistry- Oral anxiety relieving (anxiolytic) medications (such as temazepam) are sometimes prescribed by dentists or doctors to help anxious patients relax. A short-acting, small, single dose is usually taken one hour before the dental appointment.

Medication should only be taken following discussion with your dentist or doctor. You will need someone to accompany you to and from the dental visit as you cannot safely drive a car while under the influence of  anxiolytic medication.
  • Relative Analgesia-Happy Gas- Known as happy gas or laughing gas, nitrous oxide can help people relax during dental treatment. A mask is fitted to your face, and you breathe a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide. It takes effect within a few minutes and wears off quickly.

You will feel relaxed but will still be awake. You can talk to the dentist, and hear what they say to you, but you won’t necessarily remember everything once the visit is over.

For most people, the relaxed sensation created by nitrous oxide sedation is very pleasant. Occasionally people don’t like the sensation it creates, and other options can be considered.

Your Dentist will listen and acknowledge your concerns and anxiety, determine the best way to deal with your phobia and make your visit more comfortable. Do not hesitate to bring these fears up when you schedule an appointment and let us help you.
